Rosewood Writing Box

Rosewood Writing Box, fine grained with a high polish, with Boxwood inlay on the lid and front, which frames the well-figured Rosewood. The box dates from early to mid 19th century. The brass insets on the lid and at the escutcheon, and the brass handles, form a striking contrast with the richly coloured Rosewood. There is a repair to the lid, back left see photo 4. Inside, the new slopes are covered with a Dark Aubergine-coloured leather. Beneath the lower slope, the box is lined with a Japanese paper, Blue/Grey Blossoms on Lilac and Gold. The reverse of the slopes are lined with Lilac Lokta paper. Beneath the upper slope, the interior of the box is plain polished Mahogany. There are one open and one lidded compartment, and spaces for two inkbottles. No key. An elegant, good looking box.JB 0277
